Adding exercise to the plan

If you've read this far you'll know I'm lazy. The prospect of adding exercise to my sedentary lifestyle filled me with dread so I needed to find something I knew I could keep up with. More importantly I had to find something I knew I would actually do in the first place. So what did I do? Well I bought a basic bicycle and found the nearest bike-friendly park. You don't need to go crazy with the bike - you don't need disc brakes or full suspension - you just need something with a few gears. I picked a park and now I alternate. One evening I walk around the park once. On alternating evenings I cycle around it six times. When walking I make sure I'm doing about 4mph - maybe a little less. Anything less than 3mph and you're getting no benefit from it, so a slow amble around your chosen route will do nothing for you. When cycling, I use one gear higher than feels natural. This means I have to expend more effort to keep going.

Keep it simple, stupid

There's no point in buying home gyms, or memberships, or anything else fad-like because if it's something you're not really interested in, I guarantee you'll lose interest and it will be money wasted. Walking and cycling are good for you when you do those activities properly and they're easy to get into. Pick a variety of routes - mix it up to ensure you don't end up doing the same thing time after time. Keep it interesting. Most importantly, make time for it each evening and don't view it as a chore. As soon as it becomes humdrum, you'll get bored with it and stop doing it.
