Be aware of the labels
Making sensible food choices doesn't just happen when you eat out. You should be thinking about it when you do your weekly shopping too. Food labels will tell you a lot about what you're buying. Just because the box has a "low fat" sticker on the front doesn't mean it's good for you. One good example is cereal bars. Their content is all over the place. The low-fat ones have less fat but more sugar than the regular ones. The low-sugar ones are the opposite. In truth, the plain old regular bars are a good middle-of-the-road option. Too many people unwittingly grab something because of a label on the front without reading the label on the back. If you're properly serious about watching your weight, part of the PS3 diet means you should read the nutrition labels if you have any doubts.
The all-you-can-eat buffet
Making sensible food choices is something that is illustrated clearly at all-you-can-eat buffets all over America. It makes me angry to see people who have no control over their impulses when they get to the trough. But why? Let me explain what normally happens, and how making some sensible choices can help you out at the all-you-can-eat buffet.
What normally happens. You visit the buffet and pile your plate high with food. Pizza slices, a scoop of beans, a heap of mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, a steak - everything. Then you return to your table and eat maybe 40% of what's on your plate. The rest gets thrown away. This is irresponsible and stupid - there's no point in throwing good food away. Worse - if you actually do make it through the whole plate, that's a ton of food you've just inhaled.
What you should do instead. It's an all you can eat buffet. There is no limit to the number of times you can go back. Get smaller portions - a little of this, a little of that, and return to your table. Empty the plate and then if you're still hungry, go back and have a little more. It takes time for your brain to register "full". Give it that time - don't overload your stomach with a massive helping of food because by the time your brain gets the full signal, you'll well beyond that point.
So you see - as far as your intake goes, it's all about sensible choices. And if you're serious about losing weight, there's one huge choice you can make which will seriously test your will : cut out one meal a day.
